Summary of Allocation Categories

Student Safety:

Campus Supervision

An allotment is made to the school to help fund additional hours for yard duty supervisors. The additional staff members assists in recess and lunchtime recess supervision of students.  Funds are also used to support Playground Projects.  The campus playground is a busy place at lunchtime and we need extra eyes in order to protect our children.

Student Support:

Starting Arts Program

During school programs may include both integrated (art taught with another subject) and independent (art for art's sake) classes. Careful consideration is taken to design arts programs that support and enhance general education goals and incorporate the California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards. Several types of programs are offered, including:

  • Visual  Arts
  • Dance
  • Theatre

Starting Arts can also provide professional staff development in all four arts disciplines for grades K-12, as well as "ready to teach" integrated lesson plans for grades K-5. Artists are available to facilitate individual school productions on a contractual basis as directors, choreographers, set designers, vocal directors, etc.

Middle School Projects

Funds have been set aside to go specifically towards middle school programs and activities. Middle school teachers and student groups can request funds from DCSCO. During SY 2010-2011, DCSCO purchase solar ovens for the science classrooms.

School Events

This covers a wide variety of events at the school: Field trips, Promotion ceremonies, etc.

After-school Programs

DCSCO support odyssey of the mind and other after-school programs.

The after-school robotics teams now receive funds directly from DCSCO.  These funds are spent on the robot kits that make the program possible.

Staff Support:

Teacher Allocations

Each teacher is given a grant each year to use toward teaching supplies.

Usually teachers, schools, and classrooms accumulate supplies and tools over many years. With a new school, much more needs to be purchased, and teachers are looking for our support to help get what they need.

As the school grows, more teachers will be hired and all classrooms will need additional items for this year and the future.

K-5 Teacher Substitutes for Testing

Funds have been set aside to allow for teachers to do one on one testing for the kids.  Substitute teachers are brought in while teachers do report card testing.

G6-G8 Teacher Planning

Middle schools teachers need one day the team can meet to plan.

K-G5 Additional Prep

Similar to the middle school teacher planning, the K-5 teachers also need planning time.  In 2010, there was a "roving" substitute teacher that allowed for teachers to prep.  The 2010-2011 year has allocated additional funds for teacher prep. so they have dedicated substitute teacher instead of a "roving" one.

Organizational Expenses

DCSCO will use some funding for operating expenses (insurance, tax fillings fees, publicity, etc. ).  The Board is constantly trying to minimize these expenses.   No founders or officers of DCSCO receive any compensation.

Discretionary/Reserve Fund

It is important for the organization to have reserve funds in order to avoid banking fees during Fiscal Year transition and to fund emergent programs that were not known at the start of the school year.

Digital Sign Fund (Purchased and Installed August 2013)

In 2005, the first DCSCO board started a fund to purchase a digital sign for the school. Over the years, various boards and the membership have voted to set aside funds from their yearly fundraising funds to contribute to the goal. Currently, the fund has $10,000.00 in a separate interest-bearing account and will be used to purchase a digital sign upon approval from the school administration and when installation details are completed. The sign will be used to communicate upcoming events and/or announcements. The sign will support one of the major parts of DCSCO's mission of informing the community about the school. UPDATE: The digital sign was purchased in May 2013 and the sign was installed in August 2013.

Science Camp Grant Fund

In 2012, the DCSCO board allocated funds for a Science Camp Grant to be used by 5th grade students who have financial difficulties in funding the fees. Teachers and the administration may apply on behalf of the students once they have identified the specific needs. As of 9/12 $3,639.00 is in a separate interest-bearing account.
